Fall into Winter: Read-Alouds to YA

ISBN: 9798289032577
Publisher's Synopsis:
This inspiring children's book recounts the biblical story of David and Goliath, highlighting important lessons about faith, bravery, responsibility, and respecting others. Through engaging illustrations and thoughtful reflection activities, young readers learn how trusting in God, being true to themselves, and preparing diligently can help them face life's giants with confidence. Perfect for teaching values and encouraging an understanding of how God's strength works through ordinary individuals.

"There once was a young man named David..."
MrsK's Review: Faith: David
In this aligned retelling of David and Goliath, young readers will learn respect, responsibility, curiosity, courage, being prepared, and willingness to protect what is right. This booklet has pages paired with a comic graphic and a beginning reader/parent read aloud section. David's journey against the mighty Goliath is well known, yet Valor's retelling includes discussions for every step of David's encounters on his way to his famous, if not largest moment of faith and courage. Once the story is shared, there are "depth" learning pages (complete Bible text; glossary; discussion questions; word search; reflection fill-ins; and an individual journal entry).

Why is David's courageous journey worthy of a "deeper" discussion? Everyone has those moments when courage meets a giant, are your young learners ready to stand steadfast?
For any parent, homeschooler, and educator... this journey is an excellent resource for every directed learning setting,

Stress. Doubt. Fear. Avoidance may feel like the easier path, but the cost is high—stalled progress, strained relationships, and a loss of confidence. Too often, we sidestep discomfort, missing the opportunity to grow. It doesn’t have to be this way. As a bestselling author, motivational speaker, pastor, and faith-based mentor, I’ve helped individuals and organizations turn obstacles into opportunities. My approach is rooted in biblical wisdom, practical strategies, and personal empowerment.

Publisher's Synopsis:
Ember is in charge of the bakery while the baker takes a trip and he's excited to show what he can do! When an opinionated fairy princess swoops in demanding a cake, he eagerly agrees. So what if he's only baked bread before? How hard can it be?

The sugar hits the fan when Ember's first attempt is a complete disaster. He tries again and again, but the royal customer is not happy. Everyone told Ember he was such a good baker, so why can't he get this right? If he doesn't figure it out soon, the only thing on the menu will be humble pie.

"Maybe he wasn't a natural baker."
MrsK's Review: Read-Aloud Fantasy
Ember was known for his "natural" baking skill. "He loved baking bread!" His customers devoured even the burnt breads. When an unexpected letter is sent to Ember, he doubts the special request is something he can bake. He never has heard of a birthday cake bread. Even his notes wouldn't produce what the Princess wanted. Will Ember get beyond his self-doubt.?

With a beautifully crafted journey into what can be, little ones will quickly begin re-reading Ember's story whether they can read every word, or they create their own version... the hours spent with this tale is worthy of every home library! It is scrumptiously delectable...
Enjoy this celebration of seeing a task through to completion,

But Dongzhì is all about finding warmth through togetherness, even in the depths of winter. With her family by her side, maybe Weiwei can do more than just endure the cold. Like the chickadees that sing and the méihua that bloom, can she open her heart and embrace the season?

"There are no hummingbirds or chrysanthemums this year..."
MrsK's Review: Realistic Fiction
Now that Weiwei's family has moved. All there is a blanket of snow. How will she celebrate the longest night of the year? Publisher's Synopsis:
When a little girl finds out her family is planning a simple Christmas this year, she's not so sure about it. But soon she gets into the spirit of simplicity and generosity by making presents and Christmas decorations with her parents and grandparents on their family farm. She and her mama share Christmas cookies with friends they meet, inviting everyone to join them for Christmas in their little red barn.

Warm and heartfelt, this story invites children and families to imagine an inclusive Christmas, focusing on the simple pleasures of connection, community, and the care and generosity shared by making things by hand. Step-by-step directions for creating three handmade Christmas gifts are included at the end of the book. A Simple Christmas on the Farm is an inspired companion to author Phyllis Alsdurf's bestselling Thanksgiving in the Woods, a picture book based on the real-life story of a family that celebrates Christmas in the woods in Upstate New York.

When white frosts the barnyard fence posts,
and snow blankets cover the fields...
that's when we start to get ready for
Christmas on the farm."
MrsK's Review: Holiday Family Read Together
Keeping it simple... what does that look like. Focusing less on getting and more on giving... how will that feel? Will ribbons on the tree or cookies baked to share bring joy to the senior center?  Or... will handing out cookies be the invitation for all to come to Christmas on the farm.

Busy crafting will dress the barn with warmth. Evergreen boughs will shelter the handmade nativity. Just a home-made Christmas... until friends and neighbors arrive... and then...

Christmas time on the farm "rings" in the holiday's goodness, of games, conversations, sledding, snowball fights, and every aspect of joyous goodness.

As with most readers, there will be fond memories to share about your family traditions, silly stories, hopes and dreams, and a family connection that can be shared with all at this year's Christmas at your home....

Ever since I was a young girl, I wanted to become a writer. I was known to write overwrought poems as a child. At about age 8, I experienced my first rejection: for a poem I submitted to a girls magazine. I wrote it in pencil on a piece of cardboard and sent in a big envelope to New York City. I’m not even sure I got a rejection card, but it never appeared in print! Since that humble beginning, I’ve continued to be an avid reader and writer and persisted in my dream to become a published author. A former magazine editor, writing and journalism professor and author of many articles and books, I live in Minnesota with my husband Jim and our miniature goldendoodle, Lloyd. My children’s picture book writing reflects my upbringing on a Minnesota dairy farm. My six brothers and sisters and I did farm work, but we also loved to explore, create, and imagine together. We built intricate hay forts and defended ourselves against imaginary enemies, dug for critters in the muddy creek that ran through the farm and went on explorations in our “big woods.” Living on a farm left ample room for the imagination to blossom and laid the seedbed for stories I would tell years later.

Publisher's Synopsis:
From three-time Newbery Honor winner Jennifer L. Holm, a chilling but heartfelt story of a girl being raised in a compound who doesn't understand how isolated and unusual her life is... until she must encounter the outside world.

Whatever you do, don't leave home. Razzi has always been told: Don't go Outside. It isn't safe. There are people and creatures out there that will harm you. The walls of the Refuge will protect you from them.

Razzi's friend Ollie was curious about Outside... and it led to his death. So Razzi is trying to be on her best behavior. She is the oldest kid left, the one the younger kids look up to. She has to follow the rules.

But Outside has a way of getting in, and Razzi, guided by a dog she has a strangely close connection with, wonders what it’s like to run free beyond the walls. If she steps away from everything she's ever known. What will she find?

MrsK's Review: GR 4-6 Reality Fiction/Dystopia
Meet Razzi a spirited young pre-teen whose favorite possession is an orange "feel-like-your-being-hug" bean bag chair. Since the time of the rationings, she lived with her family and others in the Refuge. Outside was unknown and off limits. Her "dreamscapes," rarely occurred during a time by herself. She was known for being "off" into her imagined destinations. Places where animals were scampering, trees produced amazing tastes of sweetness, dolphins could leap in the ocean with penguins sunbathing on the shore, as well as the luxury she experienced of freedom to wander and explore. Her younger brother, Bing was only seven, annoying, and completely unaware about the situation they were living in.

The Great Poisoning was decades ago, yet the adults were always watching, on alert, and prepared for another invasion. In fact, the Searchers still roamed looking for survivors that needed to be exterminated. That was why her Papa was strict even though he valued all of the kids. He often reminded them that they were the future.

Razzi is struggling with all the new pieces of discovery, every day it seems she overhears, notices, or realizes that the Refuge might not be all there is to life. Who is the "Dealer?" If he survived, could there be other kids like them?

Finally, the day arrived when Razzi knew, it was time to see the Outside. Will she survive or could a Poisoned capture her?

With outstanding story-weaving, every twist and turn becomes the hook for turning the pages. Razzi's quest could end quickly... get ready to read through the night.

Avery is a firecracker. In a crayon box of colors, she’s the shocking pink and laser lemon, when all she wants is to be a quiet tan or soft cornflower blue. Her cousin, Jax, is a wall flower, because sometimes it’s better to stay quiet when the alternative is to be told that you’re doing or saying everything wrong. They seem to be the only ones who don’t know what happened years ago when their family shattered and went off in different directions.

When their beloved Aunt Robbie summons the large, estranged family together for a gathering at their broken-down family cabin on Crooked Lake, instead of getting the answer, Aunt Robbie delivers some devastating news. Avery and Jax learn that by the end of the summer, the island that’s been a part of their family for generations is going up for sale.

Forced to stay on the island with their estranged family to get it into shape to sell, Avery and Jax begin to dig through the history of the long-abandoned house and its contents… including a sprinkling of diary pages that were hidden around the island decades ago, the summer their family was torn apart.

"The big wooden cabin comes into view ahead;
it looks like a mystical tree-trunk castle sticking out of the dirt-crusted earth..."
MrsK's Review: GR 5-7 Realistic Fiction/Mystery
Meet Avery a fourteen-year-old who is determined to engage her family in uncovering the truth and mending their differences. She is exuberant, inquisitive, and speaks her thoughts rather loudly. She loves and accepts everyone, after all they are family... right!

Meet her cousins: Jax who is reluctant towards any type of attention, especially if it draws his dad's focus on what he is or isn't doing, and Finley who is younger, bouncy, and somewhat clingy yet always ready for an adventure.  Then there is Hazel and Hugo who are six-year-old twins.

They have been gathered on "their" island. Why did their Aunt Robbie "command" them to gather this summer? The adults seem very reluctant and "put-out" about getting together, what could be so bad about spending a few days on a family island? If the adults have decided to sell their family retreat, why not fix it up and enjoy one last family vacation?

When Avery and Jax discover a diary page, they begin their search to know more about their oldest aunt. How did she die? Was it on the island? Why have the adults never mentioned her? Their grandma loved coming to the island, why was she always alone on the island? What is causing this gathering such anguish?

A summer vacation, moments to remember. Memories resurfaced. When the time comes to leave, will the adults realize that what they have is worth mending?

This is story is beautifully woven with enduring emotions, adventurous discoveries, renewing connections and hope from a young spirit yearning for her family to be... family!

She understands that she is in training, yet even a small bee falling mid-flight creates a deep stirring within her to come to its aide. As Queen that will never be allowed. How can that be? She must get back, for Elvina will surely discover that she is not in her room, which would be unacceptable since she is the current Queen.
Luckily, she left her balcony doors unlocked so no one should see her climbing back into her room.

Petra the one who will always provide cover for Clarion, by trade she specializes in metalwork in which there is nothing she can't create or fix. Artemis is Clarion's assigned "scout-talent" who must guard and protect her every move. These two are her friends, both are loyal and valued.

On the day when a single crack traveled the surface of the ice, a "whisp of shadow" began to form and the "woods trembled..." All is in danger. What monster has entered the realm of Pixie Hollow? Clarion feels called to rescue or at least investigate what is causing so much fear amongst her soon-to-be Queendom.

Meet the Warden of the Winter Woods, he is an unassuming winter fairy. When Clarion first meets him, she is surprised to find a winter fairy who is polite. Winter fairies, as well as the Winter Woods have been banned for as long as she has been in Pixie Hollow. Milori was confident when he met Clarion. He was on his way to request an audience with the Queen of Pixie Hollow. He was on a mission of extreme importance, so for him "surprise" in meeting Clarion wasn't a problem for he already knew who she was and soon would be. He arranged for them to meet at sunset. He accurately gathered that Clarion would return.

Their first meeting will be the only way to save Pixie Hollow. Will Clarion live through this fight with the released monster? Will she find a way to awakened those who have been stricken? Will Queen Elvina include her in this fight, or will she insist that her coronation is more important? Will Milori help her bridge the long-standing banishment between Pixie Hollow and the Winter Woods?

A delightful fairy tale, twists and turns with every chapter. Characters so well crafted, you feel as if they have been crafting a Disney movie within your mind rather than just entertaining you with words. This is the best fairy princess/queen ever portrayed. Don't waste the pixie dust magic... read it soon,

MrsK's Reading Bio

Reading is important! No questions asked, not even a blink of the eye from any student I grew up with. On the first day of the First grade, we were given our first books. Day two we all read aloud, round robin of course. Day three we were place in our first basal, now known as a lit circle group. Books were so important, publishers designed new curriculum so that every student was reading by the end of the first week. These early readers had images that looked like what we could see in the classroom, beyond the classroom, even on the big screen. Reading is important, throughout history every generation has believed that “Reading” opens up the world for endless possibilities.

I adore the 1950’s Dick and Jane books. Actually, most reading specialists and experienced (45+) educators believe that every student learned to read with Dick and Jane. Since these books are being re-issued, I have heard many parents, grandparents, and students claim that Dick and Jane stories of repetition does teach students to read.

Early influences from my mother influenced my desire to read. I would watch her read and we would go on “secret” excursions to the library. The library became my playground. I owned every book I could carry home, of course they needed to be taken back to their home after visiting with me for a week or two. My first book that I could pull off of the library shelf and read was, Father Bear Comes Home. I only saw my dad on Sundays for a few hours. I would pull this beginning reader off of the library shelf every week. Every week I would try to read the first chapter. Every week I got further in the story. My mom would let me check it out, only if I could read it myself (She didn’t like the illustrations therefore she didn’t want to take time to read it to me). One day, I pulled the book from the shelf and when mom came to get me from the children’s corner, I realized that I had read the whole story. I ran to the check out desk and the Librarian KERCHUNKED the checkout card. My mother, brother and neighbors read. My teachers read. We all read aloud all day long in school. The Priest read aloud every day at mass, even in Latin. Everybody in the Doctor’s office read. People on the bus read. Dad’s waiting in their cars as the Mom’s and children grocery shopped, read. In fact, once you could read and write, Sunset Magazine considered you a reader and sent you mail every day.

Reading is important; I’ve spent my life reading. I’ve traveled around the world and into space through books. My favorite genre is whichever book I have open at the time. Children’s Literature is my passion. Book clubbing is one of the best past times, especially if food is involved. In fact my friends of old are in a book club and we are about to embark on a beach trip to “read” and discuss our newest selection.

My “home-run” book story has helped every student find his or her own “home-run” reads. Every year, I have shared my, Father Bear Comes Home, and every year my students have brought in their “home-run” books. That’s the “diving board” into our Lit. Studies.

In “Growing Up Digital,” Tapscott’s insights into the new generations enthusiasm for the Net reminded me of my generation’s enthusiasm for reading, movies, TV, parties and our driving permits. The Net-Generation, as Tapscott describes, “are learning, playing, communicating, working, creating communities, and enforcing a social transformation.”
N-Geners are interactive “techies” who are always looking for a way to “work it” verses the TV Generation of “Baby Boomers” who started out looking for “how it works.” Reading development is tougher today, society moves too fast to invest their “non-working” free time into a book or even “home work.” Since I stepped into my own classroom, I have seen students being told to read, being forced to read, and threatened into reading. Homework is not any longer the vehicle for students to gain their future lifestyles or careers with. Yet, the Internet does create an enthusiasm for learning. Since I have been enrolled in these courses, I have used the computers in every subject. My students are using the newest technology in the classroom because I am giving them investigative sites to use as they learn from each other and books. I agree with Tapscott, in order to bridge the gap with this up and coming generation we must “live and learn with them.”
