In 1936, Kentucky, the book woman begins her deliveries on her mule. When riding through rough trails, on a mule, there isn't an opportunity to "call" someone when in need. Nor is there a safety "net" for stranger danger. Would you be willing to ride into the mountains just to deliver books?

Cussy Mary is 19. She enjoys the honor of delivering books to those who live around Troublesome Creek. She is committed to the need of literacy for those who dwell in the wilderness, Kentucky's "hill folk." She is "called" to the "grit" of hope that one day a library will bring educational inspiration into the minds and hearts of a new generation. She is one of the "Blue People" of Kentucky, those that are viewed as less than because of the color of their skin. Life's options are limited, yet living life is filled with possibilities. She values that the books she delivers "grows" the younger minds. So, she is willing to face whatever comes across her path!

1944, Ironside Lake, Minnesota... a time of unrest, fear, doubts, and sacrifice. Have you heard that life sometimes brings a "turning point" in which everything you've planned gets delayed or taken out of your control? When your community is in need of a thread to hold on to? During WWII, a small town will experience the government's decision to open a German POW camp without consideration of their thoughts, feelings, or fears.

Johanna was in the process of completing her linguistic degree. She planned to meet the world head-on and to experience life through the language of commonality. No where, within her plans, did she expect a "called upon" government request. Nor, would she have expected her plans to be side-tracked by the government. Receiving the notification that she would be placed as a translator in a POW camp is not what one would choose. To be sent back to your hometown in the midst of their "unrest," as a camp translator, well how would the town accept this act of "un-patriotic" positioning?

With in a series of letters, we discover Johanna's realization that she is understanding the hearts of the enemies. Translating their letters to and from their home, their loved ones, leads to the commonality that she knows her town is experiencing with their sons interred in POW camps around Europe. How does life meet changes? Who would you be if you had to start over? Natalie has been thrown into an inherited bookshop, as well as becoming a care-giver for her grandfather. There is no time to adjust to the tragedy she experienced during her one moment of recognition.

Growing up in a book store can be fun. New titles arriving. New discoveries and journeys with every turn of the page. Yet, what about her life-wishes? The hope of a new job. A new life. What is unfolding is not part of her wish list! Once she gets everything taken care of, maybe then she can begin following her wish list. Or will she? With an edge of resentment, Natalie will discover that her new life is molded by the unexpected gift of a change in attitude and strangers that become family.

Dana is twenty-six, newly married, and living in California. As they were unpacking into their new home, Dana began feeling strange as if something was calling her. Suddenly she was in a green area... what was happening to her? Where was she? All she could remember was that her life with Kevin had become unfocussed.

At some point in time, she hears the screams of a child. A child drowning! Knowing how to save the boy, she doesn't hesitate as the little red headed boy lays motionless. Other than the mother screaming, the only sound she could hear was the sound of a gun being cocked. Then everything vanished.

She had no answers for Kevin. She only knew she had saved a boy from drowning and the adult voices sounded like they were from the deep south. Yet later that evening, she felt herself falling out of her chair.. in a beat of her heart...Dana was once again in the South, in a small cabin with a older child lighting the drapes on fire! Rufus appears to be around 8 years old. Why would he be starting a fire?

After her father died, Octavia Butler was raised by her widowed mother. Extremely shy as a child, Octavia found an outlet at the library reading fantasy, and in writing. She began writing science fiction as a teenager. She attended community college during the Black Power movement, and while participating in a local writer's workshop was encouraged to attend the Clarion Workshop, which focused on science fiction.

She soon sold her first stories and by the late 1970s had become sufficiently successful as an author that she was able to pursue writing full-time. Her books and short stories drew the favorable attention of the public and awards judges. She also taught writer's workshops, and eventually relocated to Washington state. Butler died of a stroke at the age of 58. Her papers are held in the research collection of the Huntington Library.

Most of us have had a teacher like Mrs. Warnecke... you know the one! Don't you?

The minute I heard a review of this book, I had to read it. When you have spent what seems like a life-time "becoming" an educator... you never feel that you've done all that you could to guide, inspire, and ignite your learners to succeed beyond their deceiving self-images. By the time 1980 rolled into my life, I was ready to follow the "calling" and return to what I wanted to be when I grew up. The compelling desire to experience a story about a teacher who made the difference continues to "re-kindle" the hope that educators seek... the "seeds" of revelation that will inspire our future citizens.

Cindi Rigsbee became a teacher. A novice teacher learning how to teach her students. Becoming "seasoned" brings forth enough experiences with her learners, in which she will seek to understand the individualized challenges her learners face, challenges that will "re-define" her techniques, "hone" her skills, and create an atmosphere of relationships with her students. As an educator, she continues to greet each day with her "targeted" goal... that her "students will want to learn from her."

Meet Ashley... she is "unafraid." With her father in prison, Ashley is once again placed into a new foster home. Thinking that this foster home will be just like all the others, she realizes that these foster parents have a talent for meeting her "wit" and "equalizing" her sass. She quickly discovers that there is a shared talent in this home, a talent that could provide a positive avenue beyond a temporary life.

Ashley's quick "wit" and sassy attitude has provided a bit of a "secret" identity. Yet, these foster parents are equipped to help Ashley challenge what she does with her artistic ability. Unfortunately, at what price will her choices lead her... astray or home.

What is great about this graphic novel is the weaving of Ashley's story as it is portrayed with the perfected art work of Gretel Lusky. Once you meet Ashley... your creative side is "uncapped."

Meet Wink, he is a spirited 7th grader who meets his rare-eye cancer... head on! Most of us remember those crazy days of middle school. Those that soared... those that bullied... and those who remained affected by the "roller coasting" trauma of trying to fit in. Can you imagine what your life might be like when your one eye is always in a wink "oozing goo" at all times?

Wink is by no means willing to "give in" or "give up." With great "grit" he discovers that his inner hope and strength will bring a unity to many of those who walk the halls of his school. Abby is that first grade friend, you know that type of relationship that stands next to you without faltering. Isaac is a gamer, his view on life is in a different dimension.   Rob Harrell wrote and drew the syndicated daily comic strip Big Top through 2007 and currently creates the long-running strip Adam@Home.

Harrell wrote and illustrated the graphic novel Monster on the Hill, published by Top Shelf. The story of a town with a down-on-his-luck monster, Monster was the inspiration for the animated movie Rumble (2021) from Paramount Pictures.

Since that one night, when the man with the gun cocked it and fired... it was like his  "brain was going to pop" in his head and it was "enough to make his heart hiccup!" That was the night... Coyote is the best storyteller when it comes to "real-life" twists and turns. Sometimes in life, life happens. It's part of everyone's journey. It's about the "how" you travel the path before you, not what's been available.

Coyote's story begins unfolding with that moment in her life when she has to "love" her father into returning to the place they once called home. Along the way, their bus becomes a traveler's unique ride to destinations unknown. Coyote and her dad have one rule for their traveler's, you must be able to answer Rodeo's three questions: favorite book; favorite place on earth; and favorite sandwich. If you think these are odd questions, well there's a whole lot of information that's given about someone's life when you're riding a school bus back home.

Meet Chase an generational football hero. Or so he thought! A select few in a "league all of their own." You probably know a group of middle schoolers who are living life in this "thoughtless" reality. That was Chase then. Chase now... well the only thing he remembers is falling and someone screaming.

Amnesia. How could he remember what that word means, yet not remember his name, who the lady and man standing at his hospital bed is? Can you imagine that type of scenario? As Chase recovers, his life only gets worse. Try to imagine what it would be like to return to school, only to see fellow students run from you. Imagine what it would be like to see fear in someone's eyes just because you said hello to them!

They say that Chase's amnesia won't last long. What type of  "grit" will Chase need as he follows his potential instead of what other's knew him to be before the fall? Let's just say, it will need a measure of determination and a lot of courage. With the help of those willing to trust his new personality, Chase learns how treating others matters. I don't know about you, but when a book's title or cover design "begs me" to take a closer look... well could you resist opening this book?

This is a multi-faceted adventure. It begins with a quick introduction to Inkling's creation and continues in the little ink spot's growth with-in Ethan's family. Rickman the cat is not impressed with Inkling, not in the slightest. Sarah is Ethan's little sister and she is completely... head over heals... enthralled with Lucy the puppy aka Inkling.

Ethan begins to rely on Inkling's ability to create "masterful" illustrations for his 6th grade project, yet how does he keep Inkling from his dad's office? You see, Inkling only needs one thing to survive, unfortunately that one thing seems to be found in Mr. Rylance's office. Could there be a purpose for Inkling beyond helping Ethan? 

This is one of the most inventive novels... If you are a reader that enjoys graphic novels, try this novel for the many illustrations and cartoon blocks will provide many moments of artistic inspirations. If you are a reader that requires more depth in your reading enjoyment, this novel is uniquely woven with engaging "sparks" of creative story hooks... mysterious red herrings... and delightful surprises.

Meet the Author:

 Kenneth Oppel I was born in 1967 in Port Alberni, a mill town on Vancouver Island, British Columbia but spent the bulk of my childhood in Victoria, B.C. and on the opposite coast, in Halifax, Nova Scotia...At around twelve I decided I wanted to be a writer (this came after deciding I wanted to be a scientist, and then an architect). I started out writing sci-fi epics (my Star Wars phase) then went on to swords and sorcery tales (my Dungeons and Dragons phase) and then, during the summer holiday when I was fourteen, started on a humorous story about a boy addicted to video games (written, of course, during my video game phase). It turned out to be quite a long story, really a short novel, and I rewrote it the next summer. We had a family friend who knew Roald Dahl - one of my favorite authors - and this friend offered to show Dahl my story. I was paralyzed with excitement. I never heard back from Roald Dahl directly, but he read my story, and liked it enough to pass on to his own literary agent. I got a letter from them, saying they wanted to take me on, and try to sell my story. And they did.

One of the greatest expectations of summer has always been the moments in which I could begin checking out books at our local library for my lazy summer adventures. Back in the day, we would visit the library during Memorial Day weekend and have the delightful opportunity to browse book shelves for our "out of school" summer kick-off. There was no reading incentives, nor any summer reading logs. It was a time of simplistic "joy" to leave the library with a stack of books that promised "grand" adventures!

Then all thoughts of escape flee the moment you enter the cavern! Dragon eggs! Eight to be exact... Only one "thrums" to her, enchantment beckons Kale. 

This is such a "charming" dragon tale. The plot entices you to step into Kale's adventure. The dragon's are cunning, dangerous, unpredictable... and yet... protective if you have been called. The settings, well, how would you run away from cliffs with crashing waves, damp caverns, and forests with the unknown?

From the beginning hook, your adventure with Matilda (Tilly) as she "pushes open" the door to her grandparents book store will bring delight to your day. Be ware that this book (series) will cause some discomfort if you have to do anything else during the day! 

Tilly is a curious reader. There is always so much to experience from a great story. Revisiting her favorites never ceases to bring her many hours of explorations. Reading isn't just a past time, in fact Tilly can loose herself within the covers of a book as if she had been written into the story. In fact, while she is reading her mother's favorite story... that is exactly what happens!

Tilly's teacher has encouraged her students to reconnect with their favorite characters over the break. As well as, read a book that they have never read before. At first that seems impossible given the reality of living at her grandparent's book store. Yet, there must be a book somewhere with in all of the nooks and crannies that would "call" to her. What Tilly never expects is meeting a girl with red braids sitting in her favorite reading corner. Plus, she discovers a mysterious box of books that had been her mother's when she was young. From that point on... well let's just say that Tilly will never be far from an adventure, unraveling a mystery, or being unnerved by an evil character.  

Is there any fantasy better than some of the classics? If you have not experienced a book in which you are lead into an adventure with other book characters... this is the one to begin your summer explorations!

Middle School... a time when nothing seems "normal," fair, or safe. Jordan is an artist, actually a cartoonist who works out his thoughts and feelings with his creative designs. Have you ever felt like you were in a free fall without a parachute? That's exactly how Jordan feels... every day. This year, Jordan is being sent to a private school. A school across town. A school that will stretch his ability to remain comfortable with all that he has known. What were his parents thinking?

Life isn't always safe. Life isn't a promise that one never has to change. Life isn't meant to remain the same. Seasons come and go. Life is a series of choices, acceptance, discoveries, and understanding. How do you fit in? What do you say when others want to force you to accept their ways? How do you view adult actions when it "feels" so wrong? Is it right to think someone is a bully without knowing their story? Middle school life... how do you survive?

Sometimes there is a good read that brings a surprise... the type of a self-discovery that causes a reader to "rethink" what it would be like. This graphic novel is that type of read. The beginning of a school year is always filled with excitement, doubt, and that forever feeling of self-awareness. This is a story that every reader has experienced, especially going into middle school. This is a graphic novel with so much personality it's bound to be a story that is passed along to friends!

Kirsten must find a way to survive. There is no one that will make her path easier, nor was there anyone who could prepare her for what the world would become. One moment she is on stage, in a play with a famous actor... and the next she's forgotten amidst adults who are rushing head on into chaos.

Violence... how do you live in a culture in which no one feels safe, life is forever in a survival mode, and there is no place to call home? Having a heart to do something good is a favorable choice, yet how Kirsten deals with a past connection brings her full circle with that one moment in time that changed her world.

There was no way of knowing that this book would be published and placed into my reading pile prior to Covid 19. As we experienced our altered reality, Kirsten's character settled the panic of those days. Strength in a wisdom about who you are and what you value is something that we should never give away...

This is a journey of loneliness, angst with strangers, hope in our humanity, and wisdom in knowing that we all have a desire to make small moments valuable.

"There are two beginnings to this story..."

With in her notebook, Jess leads us into her story of survival. So often, life as we knew it is changed by circumstances beyond our control. Jess has been recovering from a fatal car wreck. Her life with her mother is packed safely away for her future and she is flying into the Canadian wilderness to a new life with a father she knows very little about. Learning about survival in her father's world will be brief. Her survival in the wilderness will determine the outcome for her future. Sure, surviving the physical and emotional pain of the wreck took every ounce of grit and determination. Yet, survival on your own... that's an unfolding series of events that determines your next breath. Especially when someone could return to check in on you... or kill you!

Are you ready for a YA survival adventure that will be like no other? Jess is one of those characters that will remain in your literary repertoire for years to come. Survival adventures have a way of helping us to move forward when life seems unbelievably unbearable. Great novels flicker through your mind when you least expect it. So, each year my husband and I would get twelve loaves of bread from different bakeries... we would ask God to point us in the direction of those He wanted us to offer up extra blessings... 'Loaves of Love' we called them."

Melting Hearts (Fuller):

Mattie has arrived in Birch Creek to help at her Aunt's bakery. Working in the bakery is a joy, as is lodging with her Aunt and Uncle. Yet, when she discovers that they have also invited the man who is building an addition onto their house to stay... well life couldn't be so cruel, or could it? Exactly how will Mattie be in their home with a man that caused her best friend such distress? What do you do when you feel that someone's choices of cruelty should be held accountable, not invited into your home. She has given her word to be of help, she won't back out on that promise. Should she accept Peter's offer of a truce? Could she keep the truce, given the friendship she has with Lizzy? 

Peter has been offered a job, with lodging, with Carolyn and Atlee. It is a great opportunity to be helpful and return a kindness. That is until he arrives at the bakery and hears Carolyn calling to Mattie? Her name "sets his teeth on edge." Merry Christmas... will the next few weeks be an eternity? At some point, he will need to make peace with Mattie. He hoped Lizzy would have told her the truth by now, unfortunately this situation might get dicey before Lizzy clears up her lies. Will he accept the help he is offered? At his age, is it possible that he could learn to read? How much responsibility could he take care of? As a "simple man," could he hope in a future beyond his front porch?

Martha works at the Sweet Tooth bakery, she has always had a place in heart for Ambrose. His smile always brought a smile to her face. She knew that God had a plan for her, yet in these trying times all she could do is pray that God's will would be done. Could it be possible that, in some "great" moment, God's will would bring her the blessing she is hoping for? It is a rare read that brings "goodness" to your heart. This story is one of reflection, for when we think of falling in love... in these days... many seek appearances and financial security. I wonder, which life is richer? A marriage in which two pure hearts are united or a marriage in which two hearts are seeking all the world can offer?
